ARTIST'S STATEMENT Rollin Kocsis The process of making art is central to my life; it is my passion. It seems I have always had a desire to paint, draw, or create some other type of visual art. I love the process and the product of art. Creating art provides me with challenges that involve the skills I have learned over the years. Canadian painter Lawren Harris said: "Paintings come out of themselves." I truly believe this and it is how I approach my work. Most of my paintings are spontaneous and they simply evolve from the process of painting. An artist friend of mine from Belgium had this to say about what and how an artist works: "I do not believe that we can really plan what we want to paint and how we will paint. It just happens and it will happen today and tomorrow. Some sparks of life can put the world on fire. We are living in the present and paint what we feel. If it is a landscape we need to express what we feel... it will be a landscape. A painting can only be a painting when the painter is convinced that this was that what he had to do even if he does not know why. I cannot agree that the work of an artist must meet requirements from someone else." I like to work in layers. Usually, the first thing I do is select a color scheme for the work I am about to complete. I start smearing paint around, and if I don't have a subject in mind, an idea is evolving as I move the palette knife or brush across the canvas. The paint on the canvas gives me ideas, like when you see images in the clouds. As I continue to paint and add layer after layer, the painting begins to create itself. My goal as a painter is twofold: to enjoy what I am doing and to make something that someone else will enjoy or learn from. What is art without an audience? Art is to be shared. I hope my work brings something of value to those who view it.
